Current donwturn creating opportunities for cyber crimes!

2008/12/11

cybercrimeBefore organizations layoff employees, make strange decisions such as cutting Marketing and Sales budget – they cutback on cyber security. That is simply crazy!!!

With all the easy-to-use software that requires little to no skills to launch malicious hacking exploits that the thousands. With reduce security updates, upgrades, and maintenance on cyberspace facing firewalls and, believe it or not, unprotected computers it is hog’s heaven for some people with too much time on their hands. Criminals have taken notice of the organizations cutting back in their ICT section; they are not looking for open doors and windows (ports) to find their way into networks — once they are in its like an hungry kid in a candy shop.

Since organizations are making survival a priority and not security, additional treats from disgruntle employees are multiplying, especially with spiteful actions such as wiping out important information from machines and databases in revenge for being let-go.

One thing is certain the current economic downturn is creating great new opportunities for the cyberspace pirates ready to hijack your website or steal your data for ransom, or much worst — destroy your data as a coup de grâce.

Tip. If you are among the many nearsighted organizations that are cutting back on ICT personnel and/or budget, at least encrypt your data to reduce its value to criminals. Additionally, install soft firewall and anti-virus/spam, that automatically update, on every machines in your organization; and do the same with OS and application patches.

koalaJust returned from a two weeks in Australia, where I assisted in three Stage 2-ISO 28000 audits in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

I must say that it changed somewhat since 1978 (my first time). Between bouts of work I managed to take some nice pictures while walking about.  However, one thing that has not changed, it is the great Aussies’ sense of humour and their laidback friendliness.

A great place to visit, after Canada…
